After graduating from Bancroft School, Mackenzie went on to The Juilliard School and received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in the five-year-accelerated-program. Presently, he is in his first year of the two-year, tuition-free, Artist Diploma program. The Artist Diploma curriculum has no class requirements, providing Mackenzie with the opportunity to study intensely with his private teachers (Robert McDonald and Emanuel Ax) and to develop a performance career.

In May, Melemed captured the 3rd Prize ($30,000) at the 1st China International Music Competition. As the only finalist from the United States, Melemed made his Philadelphia Orchestra debut with Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing performing Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

In the past two years, Mackenzie has won multiple international piano competitions, including 1st Prize and Commissioned Work Prize at the 2017 Iowa International Piano Competition, 1st Prize and Chamber Music Prize at the 2017 Maj Lind International Piano Competition (Helsinki, Finland), the 2018 Arthur Rubinstein Piano Prize from The Juilliard School, and most recently the Leo B. Ruiz Carnegie Hall Recital Prize from The Juilliard School (December 13, 2019). The Ruiz Prize is given to a current or previously-enrolled Artist Diploma student with the most inventive programming and biggest career potential.

Mackenzie has enjoyed a busy performance schedule - in addition to participating in competitions, he has given numerous solo recitals, chamber music concerts, and performances with orchestra. He has recently performed in Finland (10-concert tour), France, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and throughout the United States. Mackenzie gave the European premiere of Jeajoon Ryu's Piano Concerto in Finland, and recorded the concerto on the Warner Classics Label (October 2019 release) with Sinfonia Varsovia and Ralf Gothóni. Mackenzie recently performed concertos in Finland and appeared as the guest soloist at Poland's Beethoven Easter Festival, performing Jeajoon Ryu's Piano Concerto with the Korean Broadcast System Symphony and Maestro Yoel Levi.

Mackenzie will be competing in the The Vendome Prize (Switzerland, invitation-only/audition, July 2019). and will give solo recitals at Williams College, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Sonatina International Piano Camps, and at NYC's Dimenna Center for the Classical Bridge Music Festival.
